Update: some fund houses have paused fresh investments in gold funds
From 16 October 2026, several fund houses have stopped accepting fresh lumpsum investments, new SIP registrations and switch-ins into their gold ETF fund-of-funds. Each fund house has set its own restrictions, amid record inflows into precious metals, import concerns and pressure on the rupee.
If you already invest: instalments under SIPs registered before the pause continue, and you can redeem or switch out at any time. The pause applies to new money only.
A similar pause on silver fund-of-funds in October 2025 was lifted once supply eased. Check the current status of each fund in the Bachatt app before you invest.

How it works
How gold & silver mutual funds work
A gold or silver fund is a mutual fund that invests in gold or silver ETFs. Each ETF unit is backed by physical metal of standard purity, held in secure vaults for the fund — so you own the metal’s price, without handling the metal.
- 1
You invest any amount
Start a daily, weekly or monthly SIP, or put in a lumpsum, through UPI in the Bachatt app.
- 2
The fund buys ETF units
Your money goes into gold or silver ETFs, which hold physical metal of standard purity in vaults.
- 3
Your units track the price
The value of your units moves with the market price of gold or silver, less the fund’s expense ratio.
- 4
Withdraw anytime
There is no lock-in. Sell your units and the money is credited to your bank account.
Why funds beat digital gold and physical gold
Gold and silver funds give you the same exposure to the metal’s price, with regulation, no GST and none of the storage or purity worries.
| Gold & Silver funds | Digital gold | Physical gold | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulated by | SEBI, as mutual funds | Not regulated by SEBI or RBI | No investor regulator |
| GST when you buy | None | 3% GST | 3% GST, plus GST on making charges |
| Making & other charges | None — only the fund’s expense ratio | Buy–sell price spread and storage fees | Making charges on jewellery and coins |
| Storage & safety | Held in vaults for the fund; nothing to store | Held by a private vault provider | Locker fees, or theft risk at home |
| Purity | Standard purity set by regulation | Depends on the provider | Depends on the jeweller; check the hallmark |
| Selling | Redeem to your bank account, no lock-in | Depends on the platform | Jeweller buyback, often with deductions |
